Santa Run for Kids

There’s something magical about the Christmas holiday, don’t you think? A fresh snow fall, hot chocolate by the fire, wrapping gifts to put under the tree, and waiting for Santa to come visit your house on Christmas Eve! Now, let’s give Santa a pair of running shoes and multiply him by 400 and watch them all run through the streets of Downtown Crystal Lake!

The Kiwani Club of Crystal Lake sponsors the Santa Run for Kids 5K every year in Downtown Crystal Lake, the first Sunday of December. All proceeds go to help the children of McHenry County in need. This fun run offers all registered athletes a Santa Suit to run in during the race, ultimately filling the streets with hundreds of Santa Claus’s! And the race wouldn’t be complete without Buddy the Elf to cheer on ALL the Santa’s! And (cover your ears) I think I even spotted The Grinch at this year’s race! And if you’re lucky, you might even find the real Santa!

Registration for the Santa Run for Kids is open (in person) up until 15 minutes prior to the start of the race, perfect for any last-minute attendees that might want to join! Parking is quite ample in the area and the 5k route offers plenty of rolling hills that keep Santa thinking, “Darn, I should I have skipped that last milk and cookies!” Once you cross the finish line, you’re greeted with coffee, hot chocolate, and donuts from the famous Country Donuts.
This race is truly as family friend as it gets. What kid doesn’t enjoy dressing up like Santa and running around and then drinking hot chocolate and eating donuts? This race is also stroller friendly for families with little ones that still want to participate.

Once the race is complete, awards are given out to the top 3 in each age group inside the beautiful Raue Center for the Arts Auditorium. Every year when I sit and watch the awards I tell myself, it would be so wonderful to watch The Nutcracker in here!

So if you’re looking for a fun run to simply put you in the holiday spirit, the McHenry County Santa Run for Kids is just the one!
