Red Eye 5k

The Red Eye is back! The Red Eye is back!

The Joliet Park District’s popular fall race took a year off in 2016, but they brought it back this year with a couple of new and fun twists.

The 8k distance was scrapped and replaced with a new, 5k, cross country style course that wound through the Inwood Golf Course. The mixture of golf course terrain and backtop paths made for a challenging but fun course, in a style that is not typically seen on the Chicagoland, road-dominated, race calendar. The soft grass and hills bring back fond memories for any former cross country runner; the finish on the track provides an opportunity for runners to bust out that last bit of speed.

JPD managed to still hold on to a bunch of the aspects of the race that people loved: great swag (hoodies this year), useful age group awards (running caps), and a great post-race party, complete with donuts and bloody marys.

Runners looking for a short, fun challenge at the end of the race calendar should keep this one on their radar. The new course provides a great break from the traditional, neighborhood 5ks that can be found all throughout Chicagoland; the folks at the Joliet Park District do everything they can to make sure that their community focused events are welcoming and fun to runners of all kinds.

The Red Eye 5k is the third race in the run3 circuit, and those who registered for all three Joliet Park District races to received special run3 swag. Results for the Red Eye 5K can be found here.

Jonathan couldn’t run a mile before his sophomore year in high school but went on to run at Hope College. Now, he runs with the Fast Track Racing Team and races in almost 30 races a year, still managing to run some PRs. He couldn’t win a 100 meter sprint if his life depended on it, but still has a pretty good kick at the end of a 10k. He is the Local Advertiser/Sales employee on Chicago Athlete's staff, and also volunteers as an Assistant XC Coach at Elk Grove High School and has done that for the past 11 years.
