It was with great excitement that I was able to participate in a new race this past Saturday; the first ever Mistwood Hole in One 5K had an outstanding start.

The golf course, located in Romeoville, provided a great scenic location for a 5k. Participants ran a loop around the course on a paved, well-kept path, which included small rolling hills and beautiful scenery. Along with slight inclines, there were many downturns, keeping the entire 5k interesting. The final loop was lined with spectators cheering on runners as they headed towards the finish line.

Staff was stationed throughout the course for support and water stations.  Before the race, there was plenty of paths to run and to warm up and the building was available to keep warm.  For their first time hosting this race, the race organizers did an amazing job; they were friendly, excited, supportive and eager to lend a hand to the runners and fans.

The race field consisted of 178 total registered runners including a handful of fast runners and those who came out to exercise and enjoy the day.   The top three men finished with incredibly fast times;.  the top male winner was Mitchell Vandervort, and Monica Hernandez finished with the top time for women. Winners were given wooden medals and well-designed to reflect the age group winners.  Awards were given for the top three places in various age groups, and the overall male and female winners received a wooden plaque.

The post-race party was fun and was held in the golf club and included bagels, bananas, beer, coffee, hot chocolate and popcorn. Runners and fans hung around after and enjoyed the club house, refreshments, and awards. The race shirt was long sleeve, Dri-fit, and actually one of the best runners’ shirts I have ever received!

After speaking with the staff, they stated that they intend to host two more races this year including a night race on Thursday, Aug. 16, and a five-mile race, which would cover the majority of the golf course.   I am confident their events will become even better with time.

This is definitely is a race I would run again, and I highly recommend it for any type of runner for next year.  Special thanks to Mike Delrose for the suggestion of the race and getting the word out there to participate and Brittany Johnston, Director of Events at the golf course.
