On Sunday, Hub City Races held its annual 20 mile, half marathon and 5K race in Crown Point, Indiana. The race began at the Lake County, Indiana fairgrounds and offered a great deal of free parking for racers.
The 20 mile began promptly at 7 a.m. with a no frill start, while the half marathon and 5K-ers had a more traditional race start 8 a.m. with announcements and the National Anthem. The staggered start times ensured that each runner had ample space on the course.
The out and back course was fast and flat beginning through the scenic city streets of Crown Point. Around mile three, runners entered a paved, tree lined trail, which had the faintest hints of fall. The trail provided great, seasonal scenery, and gave off the last run of the summer feel. Mile 10 held a turnaround and racers headed back the way they had come.
A wonderful surprise of this race was the United States Marine Corps stationed throughout the course every mile or two. The great men and women of the US Marines blocked traffic, provided guidance to runners and even ran with me for a small portion of the course. With a child in US Army basic training right now, it warmed my heart to see them on the course assisting us.
In addition to the Marines, countless volunteers, Police Officers and EMT’s provided water, Gatorade and safety throughout the race, which made for a great experience. This race was very well done and a great fit for Chicago Marathon training with the 20 mile offering.
