Chicago Athlete hit the road again this past weekend looking for a drive-able, overnight stay that focuses on keeping families active. This time, we visited The Abbey Resort in Fontana, Wisconsin. Just an hour’s drive across the state line, this resort whisked us away to an experience that is like no other.
“As the only full-service resort on the shores of Lake Geneva, The Abbey Resort in Fontana, Wisconsin offers unique activities from lakeside dining to make and take events, along with resort amenities such as indoor and outdoor pools, family activities, live music, and of course, our full-service Avani Spa.” – Resort website
The resort sits on 90 acres of property along the lakefront and offers guests a wide variety of experiences. Upon check in, we were given an itinerary of events for the weekend. Also included in the booklet was all of the hours for the various hotel eateries and pools.
After checking in, we visited our room, which was cozy, charming room with an exterior entrance facing two of the hotel’s outdoor pools. The room had two plush beds and enough room to make everyone comfortable. There is nothing like a pool to keep kids active, and that was our first stop. It’s amazing how many calories you can burn by jumping in with your kids, rather than lounging on the chairs!
There were two outdoor temperature controlled pools – one family and one adults only and an indoor temperature controlled pool with a separate children’s wading pool. The pools were inclusive to children of all ages and abilities, which is always an important factor to look for when you have multiple children.
One of my favorite aspects of the Abbey is that it sits on a 24 mile path that runs along the lake front. This path is mostly flat and paved and a joy to walk, run, or even race on. I would definitely make a return to this resort to do one of my long runs on.
The resort also touts a movie theater and arcade, along with a charming gift shop filled to the brim with souvenirs, treats, and even wine!
The Abbey is situated just minutes away from downtown Lake Geneva, where visitors can find a plethora of shopping and dining. One of our favorite stops was Dust Bunny Books and Inspired Coffee, where we even found some gluten free treats.
At Chicago Athlete we like to provide families with suggestions of weekend getaways that are close enough to drive to and will keep you active and healthy. The Abbey did just that. Between a morning run on the Lake Front Path and several dips into the variety of pools, this resort offered families countless ways to keep moving. There were also many healthy food selections. We had breakfast at 240 Degrees, a restaurant inside of the resort and I was so pleased with the healthy menu options. We enjoyed a yogurt parfait and egg white omelet, along with fruit and GF bread options.
As you get ready to close out your summer and get the kids back to school, I encourage you to think about an overnight stay at The Abbey as a fun end of summer treat for the family. You can check out their full website and offerings here.
