The Third Annual Naperville Women’s 5K/half marathon was held at 7 a.m. at North Central College on Saturday. The race started and finished on the track inside of Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium, and 1,641 runners completed half marathon while 1,125 completed 5K.
There was not a lot of email communication before the race from the organizer this year; they used Facebook for most announcements. Packet pick up was available two days prior to the race day at Naperville Running Company North Store as well as race day pick up on site. It was a well-organized, quick packet pick up when I arrived at the running store on Friday afternoon. There was a long line at Race day packet pick up, so I would highly suggest to avoid it.
V-neck tech shirts have been the staple of this race for all three years. This year, a purple shirt was given to the half marathoners and a pink shirt was given to the 5K participants, along with a pair of Balega socks.
The course gave us quite a few downhills and uphills to make it more challenging. Some runners gave the city of Naperville a nickname, “Naper-hills”. Aid stations were nicely spread out every two miles and both water and Gatorade were available. At miles five and seven, GU was handed out by volunteers.
The most interesting part of this race, aside from the amazing all-female demographic, is probably the unique registration process. The entry fee for both the half marathon and the 5K categories start just at $1 and increase the amount to $5, $10,$15 and so on till the spots are sold out. The highest online registration rate for the Half Marathon is $100, and for the 5K is $50. I personally know a few lucky runners who got $1 entry. So you may be the next lucky runner? Or could it be my turn to be a $1 runner next year?
