As the fall marathon season gets closer, runners are racking up the miles however they can. This weekend two Chicagoland half marathons featured not only runners in training but also those who wanted to get in one last race before the summer comes to an end. The competition was stepped up as the top runners put up impressive performances at both the Oak Brook Half Marathon and the Magnificent Mile Chicago Women’s Half Marathon.
Runners not only battled each other and the course, but also had to deal with higher temperatures than most have seen this summer. While Saturday’s Mag Mile Women’s Half Marathon and 5K was not exclusive to women, the vast majority of runners were women, including most of the top 30. Neil Segel from Houston, Texas finished first overall in 1:18:04 with Chicago’s Tim Jung coming in second in 19:58.
Following the top two, Emily Shertzer from Jonestown, Pennsylvania was the top overall female finisher followed by Pamela Manley as the first local woman to finish and Emily Savas also from Chicago to round out the top 5. Shertzer came in under the 1:25 mark with Manley and Savas just over 1:26. The competition was so tight that the next 10 finishers all came in less than 4 minutes later. The race’s headliner Lauren Fleshman finished in 1:44:02
The Mag Mile 5K saw a pair of former Clif Bar Athlete of the Month winners dueling it out for a win. Pamela Staton was the overall winner in 17:59 followed by Jill Czarnik in 18:45. The first overall male came in third when Jaron Sangsomwong finished while Emily Ryan and Kate Middleton completed the top five.
Oak Brook Half Marathon participants enjoyed the holiday off on Monday with their 13.1 mile race in the western suburbs. While slightly hillier than most Chicagoland races, or as hilly as anything in the Midwest can really be, runners weren’t slowed. Ryan Giuliano continued his impressive 2014 season with an overall win in 1:13:49. Milwaukee’s David Williams finished in second while Jakeniah Christiansen, Steve Krauss and James Akita completed the top five. Giuliano’s finish had him nearly 2 full minutes ahead of the rest of the pack.
Elmhurst’s Alyssa Poremba finished in 1:22:42 as the first overall woman and 11thoverall. Poremba topped Jacqui Giuliano, Ryan’s wife, who finished in 1:25:03. Stephanie Baliga, Kim Weiss and Tiffany Cruickshank finished in the top five.
