Special Olympics Chicago Opens Spring Games

Thousands of athletes and supporters from around Chicago came to Soldier Field on Monday morning for the Opening Ceremonies of the 2015 Spring Games Competition. Predicted rain and storms held off, making for a beautiful morning to celebrate the start of the 47th annual competition.

In addition to athletes from schools and parks around the area, several other well-known faces made appearances at the event, including Chicago Blackhawks mascot Tommy Hawk, Chicago Sky mascot Sky Guy, Chicago Wolves mascot Skates, Chicago White Sox mascot Southpaw, and Chicago White Sox pitcher Jeff Samardzija. Samardzija served as Honorary Coach for the event.

“Very rarely do you get invited as an athlete to go represent other athletes, which to me is the most exciting and highest compliment,” Samardzija said before the Opening Ceremonies began.

“It’s not always about winning,” Samardzija said. “It’s always about pushing your limits and going beyond them, which in turn helps you grow and allows you to go on to other things and succeed.”

The excitement will continue all week with the Spring Games Competition for Special Olympics Chicago. The Spring Games take place at Eckersall Stadium, located at 2423 E. 82nd St. in Chicago, and center around track and field events. Competition runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. To learn more, visit socchicago.org.
