EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern Athletics has announced that registration is open for fourth annual Run For Walk, a 4.1 mile run and 5K family walk, which will be held Sunday, August 9 to honor former head football coach Randy Walker. The race will once again finish on Ryan Field and has been named by the Chicago Area Runner’s Association as a CARA Runners’ Choice Circuit event for 2015.
For the past seven years — the last three as the Run for Walk — Northwestern fans, supporters and friends of the late Walker have assembled to honor him by taking part in one of his favorite hobbies — walking around Evanston and the NU campus with his wife, Tammy, and their dog, Magic.
This year, the 5k family walk will continue and join the 4.1 mile run through Evanston’s tree-lined streets before participants will finish on Ryan Field while watching their achievement on the video board. The unique run distance harkens back to Randy’s uniform number 41 during his collegiate playing days at Miami University.
The registration fee for the run or walk is $37.50 until July 10, and includes a short-sleeved technical shirt, a ticket to a nonconference home football game and entry into the race day expo. Northwestern students may register for $25.
In addition, the event will feature the Kids’ races in and around Ryan Field. As part of the CARA Youth Circuit, kids can participate in age-group races 14 and under, finishing on the same field on which the Wildcats football players compete. CARA’s inclusion of the Run for Walk in its highly regarded circuit is a result of the terrific feedback and the positive participant experiences from the past three years as a quality running event.
“CARA is excited to have Northwestern Run for Walk on the 2015 CARA Runners’ Choice Circuit,” said Matthew Perez of CARA. “Last year we heard great feedback from our runners on this race, so we are pleased to have the RFW available to CARA Circuit racers again this year.
“The CARA Runners’ Choice Circuit is a competitive series of eighteen races,” added Perez. “CARA members can compete in this circuit of races for points and year-end awards in Overall, Individual Age Group, Clydesdale and Club competitions. This Circuit is assembled, each year, with the input of CARA’s membership, the CARA Board of Directors, post-race survey results and the CARA Racing Committee.”
This year, Northwestern welcomed Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Chicago as the official charitable partner of the fourth-annual Run For Walk, a 4.1 mile run and 5K family walk in honor of former Wildcats head football coach Randy Walker.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Chicago serves over 1,700 at-risk youth in the metro Chicago area (Lake, Cook, DuPage County, Illinois and Lake County, Indiana), and hosts two site-based mentoring programs in Evanston. Big Brothers Big Sisters mission is to empower at-risk youth by providing high impact one-to-one mentoring that enables lifelong success.
“We are honored to be the charitable partner for the 2015 Run For Walk,” said Art Mollenhauer, CEO of BBBSMC. “Randy Walker’s legacy is more than just being a football coach; Randy was a caring, charismatic leader who cared about the young men who played for him. Randy was a mentor not only to his players, but his coaching staff as well. You can see his spirit live on in the way Coach Fitzgerald runs the program now. Coach Walker embodied everything we look for in a mentor and I believe he would have been a great `Big Brother’ in our program. We are so glad Run For Walk is supporting our efforts to match at-risk youth in Evanston and throughout the Chicago area with a caring and safe volunteer mentor.”
