RUN MFG Half and 5K

Run MFG Half and 5K (9/18)

Approximately 200 runners participated in the RUN MFG Half Marathon and 5K this past Saturday.

The race took place on the lakefront with the start and finish at Arvey Field.  Due to the smaller race size, pre-race logistics were easy and the atmosphere was laidback.

Dave Kappas started runners promptly at 7:30 a.m. with a cheer squad from the Special Olympics to send them off.  The course was an out and back going south with beautiful city views by the Shed Aquarium.  There was minimal congestion as most the organized runs for marathon prep were north of downtown. Runners were able to run on part of the newly completed path which only made them more excited for to entire path to be redone.

Aid stations were every two miles and the runners spread out pretty quickly so it felt like an aided longer run for many.  Unfortunately the last aid stations ran out of cups for back of the pack runners but water fountains along the course kept racers hydrated.

Racers received a technical shirt, nice medal and refreshments following the race.

Nicole once thought that the timed mile in high school was a form of torture. In an ironic turn of events, racing is now part of half her weekends in a given year and would take an early Saturday race over a Friday night out everytime. A self-proclaimed "back of the packer", Nicole loves triathlons and run races with her favorite distances being the half marathon and olympic distance triathlon. She works full time as a health care administrator and lives in Skokie with her husband, son and spoiled dog. You can find her race reports, musing and other random thoughts on her blog.
