More than 2,000 patients, survivors, sponsors and volunteers, gathered together on Thursday, June 16 in Grant Park at the 22nd Annual ABC 7 Gibbons 5K and 3K Walk to benefit the Leukemia Research Foundation (LRF).
Nearly 70 teams participated the event; including the Penny’s Angels/ Susan’s Squad, which had more than 100 members. Susan Munic, a team leader who is currently fighting multiple myeloma, expressed her gratitude to the LRF.
“Thank you all for everything you do for cancer research. It means so much. Forever grateful,” said Munic.
Team Advocate, led by three LRF Nurses of the Year recruited a team of more than 40 blood cancer survivors and their families.
An event of this magnitude could not happen without the support of a dedicated core of volunteers. This year’s event included teams of volunteers from Home Depot, Morgan Stanley, and Groupon.
Once again Honorary co-chairs Janet Davies and Frank Mathie announced the race start LIVE on ABC 7. The event was created to honor the memory of their colleague, Jim Gibbons, a 25-year veteran investigative reporter for ABC 7 who succumbed to leukemia in 1994.
Fundraising continues for the ABC 7 Gibbons 5K Run and 3K Walk through July 15. To support a team, an individual fundraiser, or make a general donation to the cause, visit www.Gibbons5K.com/donate. #TogetherItIsPossible #MoreThanaRace #Gibbons5K
