Plenty of Options for Halloween Races

Getting runners to dress up for a holiday themed fun run is about as difficult as it is to get them to enjoy a beer after the race. There is something about dressing up and getting in to the theme that runners of all skill levels seem to enjoy. Which makes Halloween runs that much more entertaining.

Runners will have a number of options this year while looking for a Halloween race. From the suburbs to the city there are races that help runners work off that extra candy bar they plan on indulging in. With Halloween falling on a Friday this year a number of races begin a week ahead of time.

The biggest race of the holiday is the Monster Dash in Chicago. Not only will the race series attract the largest crowd, it will also feature the most running options. Monster Dash runners can choose between a half marathon, 10K and 5K on Saturday the 25th.

The Monster Dash withstanding, the remaining Halloween races on Saturday are all 5Ks. Fleet Feet will again host their Pumpkins in the Park 5K in Lincoln Park. Runners won’t have to come to Chicago for their Saturday races, The Goblin Gallop is in Joliet,Halloween Hustle 5K will be in Palatine and the Trick or Trot is in Villa Park.

Sunday the races continue in the suburbs. The Trick or Treat Trot 6K returns to the Evanston lake front. Elmhurst is the host site of the annual Run & Walk Trick or Treat Trot 5K, the Haunted 5K will be in Joliet, Pumpkin Trot is in Libertyville and thePumpkin Run 10K in Sycamore. For those looking to get off their feet and on to two wheels the Folks on Spokes Annual Potluck Picnic Hike and Haunted Bike Ride in Beecher is perfect.

The day following Halloween, Saturday, November 1, is the date of two more Halloween themed runs for those who still haven’t had enough of getting in to costume and running. In Chicago there will be the Uno 5K — Carrera de los Muertos (Race of the Dead) and the All Saints’ Day Run in Villa Park.

While wearing a fun or spooky costume is never required, it’s always a fun change of pace. For complete listing on Halloween runs and every other race, visit our calendar.
