Naperville, IL (October 20, 2014) — On the 9th of November, 6,000 runners will hit the streets of Naperville for a 13.1- or 26.2-mile tour of the neighborhoods and the downtown area of the City.
But the 6,000 runners are only a tiny fraction of what makes the Edward Hospital Naperville Marathon & Half Marathon the event that it is. The real numbers are in the spectators and volunteers such as Cheering Sections and Course Marshals along the race route through Naperville’s neighborhoods.
And you can be a part of it! If you can gather a group of neighbors, or call a meeting of your club, or get your band back together, or assemble your dance ensemble, then you can make a cheering section along the racecourse, and take part in this amazing event.
WONC Radio will be live-broadcasting on the corner of campus at Mile 18, while the North Central College pep band, cheerleaders, and dance squads will be raisin’ the roof at Mile 22. Naperville Running Company will be boosting runners’ morale at Mile 12. And cheering sections from neighborhoods, schools, scout troops, and sports teams will keep the energy high all along the course. Where can your group be?
“Runners are greatly inspired and motivated by the on-course support they experience as they run through the local neighborhoods,” explains Race Director Dave Sheble. “Groups cheering, ringing cowbells, holding posters of encouragement along the route go a long way to help these dedicated athletes get to the finish line and love every minute of it.”
To be a part of the race in an official capacity, consider Course Marshaling. The race course includes 285 Naperville intersections, with a Course Marshal will be stationed at most, directing runner “traffic” and assisting Naperville Police in managing vehicular and pedestrian traffic, ensuring the safety and integrity of the course, and of course cheering on the passing runners, while sporting an official 2014 Edward Hospital Naperville Marathon & Half-Marathon hoodie!
To be a Course Marshal or a Neighborhood/Zone Captain, find the best spot on the Race Course for you by finding your Zone on the map athttp://naperville26.com/pages/course/Course_marshal_zones.png, then register for your desired volunteer job by visiting www.naperville26.com/pages/volunteers.htm.
Be a part of YOUR race, Naperville! We’ll see you at the Races.
