Well at least it didn’t snow! I ran the Good Life Race 5k in my hometown in Oak Park. You can’t beat a race a mile from your bed.
This was the 37th year for this race put on by the Oak Park Runner’s Club. Lots of pre-race information and easy packet pickup is always appreciated. There were some issues with the sizing of the women’s shirts but a quick exchange after the race made me happy. I really like the purple color of the shirt this year!
The youth race kicked off at 8:45 and wow! Some of those kids were fast. Deo Campbell was Overall Male Winner at 6:20.3 and Lizeth Montes came in 2nd Overall and Female Winner at 6:20.7. It was an exciting race to the finish.
Women and men run separate races in this family-friendly race allowing for childcare sharing. The Lively Women’s 5k started at 9:10. I do think it’s fun to occasionally run an all-women race. It was below freezing but the sun was out and it was a glorious morning to run!
The course had residents out supporting the runners and the cheering in the last two blocks was loud. All the women finishers received carnations. Jane Bareikis from Crestwood led us to the finish in 17:47.
The men started forty minutes after the women allowing me to watch the male speedsters as they finished. Jeff Bailey of Villa Park flew by me with a time of 15:28!
This CARA Runner’s Choice Circuit Race was also the designated RRCA 5K Central Region Championship race for 2018. The flat fast course was the place for speed. Well-organized, friendly volunteers, and indoor awards make this one of my favorite races.
