One of the biggest cycling events of the year plans to take to the streets Saturday for the Glencoe Grand Prix (GGP). This year it features a new title sponsor, the Illinois Bone & Joint Institute, along with their day of world-class cycling.
While this is the first year IBJI will be the title sponsor of the signature event, they have been and will continue to be on site providing first aid services to cyclists all day. IBJI will sponsor the National Criterium Calendar National Pro Men’s Race. This is the seventh stop along the NCC and for the third time it will come through Glencoe. Being on the calendar will once again bring some of the best cyclists from across the country to the GGP.
For the second year, the GGP will also be a stop along the USA CRITS Championship Series. The USA CRITS Series is a group of events selected as some of the most exciting spectator events in the country for criterium racing.
Throughout Saturday different races will be held, including both men’s and women’s professionals. The Category 5 race will be the first of the day, starting at 8:00am followed by the juniors, masters and hand cycling over the next three and a half hours. At noon the children’s race will start for kids ranging from 4 to 9 years old.
The afternoon will kick off with the women’s PRO/1/2 races before more open races. The day culminates with the headline event, the NCC PRO/1. All of the morning races will be run along the short course while afternoon courses will be on the long course.
After all the racing finishes, the party just begins. The Glencoe Block Party sponsored by Chase Bank starts at 8:30 pm In the Village Court Parking lot. The band 16 Candles, a Chicago 80s cover band, will return after performing last year. There will also be beer from Goose Island and wine from Bottle Shop in Wilmette. Food will be served from a number of food trucks.
