The Chicago Area Runners Association announced yesterday that it has named Edward Zylka as its executive director. Zylka will replace Johnpaul Higgins, who assumed interim executive director duties after former executive director Wendy Jaehn moved on from the organization in August.
Zylka has more than 30 years of experience in both for-profit and nonprofit business operations. He came to Chicago as an executive of Motorola and has worked with tech start-ups on various levels. His involvement in the running world includes being a board member of the Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Running Club and the race director for theSwinging Bridge 8K Trail Race in Lake Forest. He also served on the board of Great Lakes Adaptive Sports, as race director for the GLASA Twilight Run and as a board member for Classroom Champions, an organization that connects top performing athletes with students in high-need schools through distance learning technology.
Zylka hopes to grow CARA member programs to meet the needs of everyone from casual runners to racers, from 5Ks to marathon distances, while making it fun, social and rewarding.
