In an email last night the Bank of America Chicago Marathon announced they would be delaying the opening of the registration lottery. The lottery was scheduled to open on Wednesday at noon but has been pushed back a two weeks because marathon officials say they need to “finalize a routine yet comprehensive assessment of our new registration process.”
The lottery will now open on Wednesday, March 19 at 12pm. It will remain open until the originally announced close date of April 7 at noon. This change shortens the open lottery time from 33 days to 19 days. The Bank of America Chicago Marathon is coming off of a 2013 event that saw their registration website Active.com crash on the day of registration opening forcing them to close registration all together and reopen in a lottery.
The announcement was made earlier in the year that they would be permanently switching to the lottery format starting with this year. Last week they released the announcement that they were officially switching away from Active.com and would be using Kimbia Racing Inc., based in Austin, Texas. Kimbia handles a number of very large events but the Chicago race would be the biggest world-wide attraction on their plate.
